Newtown Shooting Tragedy and God

December 15, 2012

It is finally come to a point where we need to have the “God Discussion” as a society. The likes of Mike Huckabee point to the removal of God from schools as the source of the Newtown Shooting. Whatever the cause is and whatever the solution, and as important as such a discussion is, such is really a policy debate, which I hope will be sorted out sooner than later by us. However, we as a society really need to examine the concept of God, so the likes of Huckabee and the rest of us can have a better discussion or no discussion at all on such an issue.

I believe, the philosopher Epicurus sums up God and why there is still evil in this world:

“Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?”.

Hence, God cannot be both omnipotent and good in the moral sense of the world, since there is evil in this world. Therefore, God as most religions see him to be does not exist. I know this is a succinct discarding of an old fundamental concept. But if God really is what most religions believe him to be, whether it is “all merciful” in the Koran or the savior in Bible, then such God cannot exist. I hope to be proven wrong.
